Now that the summer heat is on full blast, it's more important than ever to STAY HYDRATED!
While the requirement can vary depending on several factors (like exercise levels, weight, gender, environment)- Dietitians of Canada recommends women 19 years and older drink 9 cups of fluids and 12 cups for men 19 years and older (1 cup being 250 mL).
Let's not forget that what we eat also helps us stay hydrated. For example, many fruits and vegetables, like spinach and watermelon are over 90% water by weight. In addition, beverages such as milk, herbal teas, coffee and juices are also composed mostly of water- and can help contribute to your daily water intake.
But don't start chugging juices or sodas, just yet. Many of them contain preservatives, colourings, additives and tons of added sugar.
Things like high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, fruit juice concentrates are things to look out for, even in drinks that might seem healthy.
According to Harvard Health, sodas and "fruit" juices can not only provide more calories than needed, but can erode enamel, cause inflammation, lead to weight gain and increase the likelihood of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and bone disease among other chronic illnesses.
But we get it, plain water can get boring, so we're here to make staying hydrated more fun and nutritious.
