Smoov Blends on Health & Wellness: Drink Smoothies, Feel better

We all hope to achieve health and wellness. But what exactly are we trying to achieve? Let's step back and take a look at what health and wellness actually is, and if there's a difference. Health and wellness are terms that are used interchangeably, but their origins and meanings are different.

HEALTH

As established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the 1940's, health is referred to as, “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” [1]

However, this definition has received it's fair share of criticism for being unattainable, especially as it contains the word “complete”. However, it is important to note that it broadens the definition of health beyond the simple absence of disease. According to the WHO, the primary determinants of health include the social, economic, and physical environments, and the person’s individual characteristics and behaviors [2].

So, the maintenance and improvement of health, accordingly, depends on certain factors that are out of our control but also on efforts and intelligent lifestyle choices that are within our control. In fact, it depends on wellness- which is...

WELLNESS

The National Wellness Institute, considers wellness as, “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence” [3]. Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving one's full potential. It encompasses lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being. Wellness is about positivity and affirmation.

WHAT THIS MEANS

In short, health is a state of being, whereas wellness is the state of living a healthy lifestyle. Health refers to physical, mental, and social well-being; wellness aims to enhance well-being.

Life can be filled with stresses, so much so that we can - and should - ask ourselves, Can stress affect health? Ofcourse. It can affect our physical, mental, and social well-being.

But can stress affect wellness? Yes, but only to a point, in that it can affect your perspective or dampen your energy, negatively influencing your commitment to self-care and hence not giving you your best shot at achieving your fullest potential.

The main difference between health and wellness, is that wellness is always a matter of choice.

Every day presents choices as to the extent to which you do what’s best to sustain your physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being, and preserve the balance among these aspects of your health. Optimal health comes from wellness, from making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on sound health knowledge and healthful attitudes.

We can’t eliminate the stresses of life, but we can make the efforts and intelligent lifestyle choices to prevent these stress-ors from wearing us down.

Be Productive
: Finding something positive to put your energy and time towards. It can be something you are passionate about or simple enjoy doing. Be true to yourself. We are all different. That means what we think, how we feel, what we want, and how we handle things differ – and that’s okay! Embrace who you are. Recognize your strengths and your limitations, and find ways to work with them to find your path to success.

Be mindful: Notice the here and now. Take a moment and try to ‘be’ in the moment – feel the sun and wind on your face and notice the air you breathe. It’s easy to get caught up in planning for the future or thinking about the past, instead of experiencing the present- otherwise commonly referred to as overthinking. Practice mindfulness; focus on being in the here and now. Make an effort to be aware of your inner and outer world.

Be social: Connect with others and talk. Develop and maintain strong relationships with the people who support you and enrich your life. Share, laugh, and enjoy life together. Reach out to friends and family when you need support. Building connections with others increases our sense of belonging and can help us feel like we are not alone in handling life’s challenges.

To sum it up- be productive, be aware, don't stress and be nice, which all starts with taking care of your body . A sound body sets the foundation for everything else. This is rooted in our main belief that success is truly fueled by a healthy body and mind
